PANJIM: North Goa Enforcement Wing of Transport Department penalised five passenger bus drivers and conductors in a drive against drunken driving on Thursday afternoon in Panjim.
Assistant Director of Transport Sandip Desai said the drive was initiated by the Enforcement Wing following complaints from people against drivers and conductors of private passenger buses.
“We initiated the drive as a surprise check on Thursday in which we found the complaints made by the people were genuine. The drive will be taking place in North Goa on a regular time frame,” Desai said.
On Thursday officials were stationed at KTC bus stand Panjim where one driver and four conductors of private passenger buses were found under the influence of liquor while on duty on the bus.
In two hours, the team checked 22 buses, including buses operated by KTC.
“The guilty will now be penalised. Driving licences, route permits and conductor badges will be suspended for three months in addition to fines,” Desai said. He said some operators preferred keeping their buses off the road after learning of the drive.
