5 panchayats order NO sale of fish, meat, alcohol on Monday

PANJIM: Three village panchayats namely Cumbharjua, Tivrem-Orgao, Betki-Khandola, Assonora and Cudnem have decided to prohibit the sale of fish, meat and alcohol in the panchayat areas on Monday, January 22, when Ram temple will be consecrated at Ayodhya.

The island village of Cumbharjua has planned a big celebration in the Ram Temple. When the proposal was tabled, Sarpanch Nandkumar Shet seconded it. The panchayat, by an order issued on Friday, asked all the shops, outlets serving non-vegetarian food and alcohol or selling meat and fish, to remain shut on Monday.

In an order issued on Saturday, Tivrem-Orgao sarpanch Jayesh Naik said, “To all the wine shop owners, bar owners, fish vendors, chicken centres, mutton centres, Chinese stalls or fast food owners from the jurisdiction of village panchayat Tivrem-Orgao. It is being informed that the inauguration of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya Dham is being held on January 22, 2024, and there will be a grand celebration of Ram Mandir in the jurisdiction of Village Panchayat of Tivrem-Orgao. Therefore, you all are hereby requested to kindly keep your shops closed on January 22, and give your best presence in the celebration of Ram Mandir and do cooperate with the village panchayat.”

The Sarpanch has warned of strict action if any of the owners were found not obeying the orders.

Betki-Khandola sarpanch Vishal Naik, Assonora sarpanch Francis Vaz and Cudnem sarpanch Rajan Falkar have also appealed to all wine shops, chicken and mutton stalls and fish vendors located within their panchayat jurisdiction to stay closed on Monday.

Many villages across the State are gearing up for the Monday’s celebrations. However, only five village panchayats have declared a ban on the sale of non-vegetarian and alcohol products on Monday.
