MARGAO: South Goa Assistant Sessions Judge Bela Naik sentenced a 22-year-old Karnataka native to five years rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape a pregnant married woman in 2014.
Bhimsingh Rathod Kattimani was ordered to serve five years rigorous imprisonment under Section 376 read with 511 of IPC and pay a fine of Rs 5,000, or in default undergo six months simple imprisonment. He was also sentenced to undergo another two years rigorous imprisonment under Section 354 of IPC and pay a fine of 3,000, in default of which he will have to undergo two months simple imprisonment.
On December 11, 2014, Kattimani tried to rape the victim as she went to answer nature’s call near the JCB showroom at the Verna industrial estate. She tried to defend herself by biting her assailant’s hand. Kattimani fled only when he saw her husband approaching them.
Verna police later apprehended the accused at his native village, Abhigiri-Gadag in Karnataka, and brought him back to Goa. As per public prosecutor Bhanudas Gaonkar, eight witnesses were examined. Advocate K S Viegas represented the accused.
