700 truck drivers stage morcha in Bicholim for aid

BICHOLIM: At least 700 truck drivers today staged a massive morcha in Bicholim town demanding financial aid of minimum Rs 5 lakh to overcome the financial crisis.

The morcha was held under the banner of The All Goa Truck Drivers’ Association and supported by the Goa unit of Shiv Sena. The truck drivers walked through the city and the morcha culminated at the KTC bus stand.
Speaking on the occasion, the truck drivers strongly demanded that they should be given financial package as was earlier promised by the government. The Bicholim MLA, Naresh Sawal who also joined the meeting expressed his resentment over the government’s policy towards the truck drivers.
He charged that the State government was itself responsible for shutting down of mining operation in the State.
“The government has ignored the demands of the truck drivers and will raise the issue in the assembly in support of the truck drivers,” Sawal told the gathering. The Shiv sena state advisor, Adv Krishna Naik threatened that they would intensify the agitation if financial package is not provided to the truck drivers before the Ganesh Chaturthi.
