PANJIM/PONDA: With just a day left for the nomination process to end, a total of 76 candidates have filed their nomination papers for Ponda and Sankhali municipal councils.
So far 45 candidates have filed their nominations from Ponda municipal council and 31 have filed from Sankhali. Both the municipalities will go for polls on May 5.
On Monday, total 36 nominations were received for Ponda municipality polls while from Sankhali, 23 filed their papers. Ponda municipal council chairperson Ritesh and his brother Roy, both sons of Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik have filed their candidatures from Ponda municipality.
Tuesday is the last day for filing of the nominations. The scrutiny of the nominations will take place on April 19 while the withdrawals, if any, will be allowed on April 20.
Total 16,305 voters are eligible to vote in Ponda, comprising of 15 wards and another 8,640 will exercise their franchise across 12 wards of Sankhali. The counting of votes will be held on May 7.
Meanwhile, heavy rush was witnessed at the Ponda Deputy Collector/SDM office for filing of nominations on the penultimate day.
As many as 36 candidates in Ponda and 31 candidates in Sankhali filed their nominations on the second last day.
On the other hand, Sankhali chairperson Rajesh Sawal and former chairperson Dharmesh Saglani have decided not to contest the election since their respective wards have been reserved for women candidates.
