Sandalwood seized
MARGAO: Alert Margao police constables helped the Margao police to effect a seizure of nine kg of smuggled sandalwood worth Rs 25,000.
Police constables Vikas Kaushik and Pralhad Tawadkar were on duty at the KTC bus sand and the neighbouring Madel area on the intervening night of July 5-6. The duo, while on duty, intercepted one Parshuram Rathod, aged 30 years and a native of Bagalkot-Karnataka at the KTC bus stand at 4.45 pm. During a search carried out by the duo, they found the sandalwood concealed in his bag. 
Margao police station in-charge, PI Sudesh Naik said that the accused has been booked under Sections 41 & 42 of the Indian Forest Act. Investigation of the crime is being taken up by ASI Chandrakant Talawanekar under the supervision of PI Naik.
Keralites held, vehicle attached 
MARGAO: A two-member Margao police team comprising of head constable Anil Gaonkar and Nilaturi Satyam managed to nabbed two natives of Kerala  and attached from them an Innova, worth Rs 12 lakh.
Margao Police station in-charge, PI Sudesh Naik said that on July 2, a resident of Borda, Pushkal Fernandes lodged a complaint that one Mohammad Rafik, a native of Bangalore took from him a dark blue colour Toyota Innova car on rent for driving in the State. However, the accused took the vehicle to Kerala without the complainant’s knowledge, thus committing breach of trust.
PSI Ajit Umarye, who started investigations into the case, deputed the two police personnel to Kerala, who managed to nab accused Shameer Kottichira Ismael (23), and Shabad Nalupurapattil Mohammed (92), both natives of Kasargod-Kerala.
PSI Umarye is investigating the case under the supervision of PI Sudesh Naik.
Bullfight at Nuvem, one held
MARGAO: The Maina Curtorim police on Saturday evening arrested one person in connection with a bullfight held at Nuvem.
PSI Deu informed that the bullfight took place at around 5.30 pm when the police made their presence felt at the venue. He said the police have arrested one person in connection with the bullfight and investigations are on to find out the main organiser of the banned bullfight. 
“The police have gathered the names of two persons who were reported to be involved in organising the bullfight. The investigations are on”, he said.
Flat near MMC garden burgled 
VASCO: Burglars broke into a flat near the Mormugao municipal garden and decamped with gold worth Rs 3.9 lakh on Friday night. According to Vasco police, Mahesh Mohan Chandelkar stated that the burglars broke open the front door some time between 7 pm and 11 pm, before stealing the gold from the cupboard in the bedroom. The incident took place when the family had gone out of the house. Vasco police has registered a case of theft against unknown culprits and PSI Girender Naik is investigating the case.
Meet to condole Molio’s death
MARGAO: MARG Trust had called a citizens’ meeting on July 7 at 10 am at the Margao Municipal hall to condole the death of renowned freedom fighter, MARG Trust President, social and political activist and a prominent citizen from Margao Vasant Venkatesh Molio, who passed away on June 26 at his residence. MARG Managing Trustee, Gurunath Kelekar has requested freedom fighters, MARG activists, his colleagues in social and political field and citizens in general to attend the meeting and pay homage to the departed freedom fighter.
Meeting of chemists, druggists
VALPOI: A meeting of Chemist & Druggist Association of Goa will take place on July 7 at 11 am at Hotel Orion, Porvorim. In a press note, the Chairman of all Goa Retailers Aktar Shah has requested the members to attend the meeting as various issues are to be discussed in a bid to fight for the rights of the association.
NICMAR campus opening 
PANJIM: The National Institute of Construction Management and Research, NICMAR will be inaugurating its new campus building at Farmagudi on Sunday. 
The inauguration will mark the 7th year of the institute’s existence in the state after it began offering a programme through a partnership with the Mushtifund Saunstha. 
NICMAR which is based in Pune offers at its Goa Campus a two year Project Engineering and Management and this year will taken in 110 students for the two year programme. Addressing media persons, Dr Manguesh Korgaonkar the Director General of NICMAR said that with this step forwards he hoped construction engineering would be taken forward. 
 “All of our students get a placement and since the industry is growing on account of the central government push in the infrastructure sector,” Korgaonkar said adding that he hoped a lot of local students would take up the programme. 
“We now have a state of the art facility in Goa, our programmes are residential. The industry looks positive,” Korgaonkar said. 
He was flanked by Anil Counto of the Mushtifund Saunstha as well as other members of Mushtifund.

Scholastic year begins at Rachol 
PANJIM: Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao said the journey of priestly vocation entails information, formation and transformation. He was speaking at the inaugural of the scholastic year on July 3 at the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol. The function began with the Eucharistic celebration with 15 concelebrants. The Rector Dr Aleixo Menezes thanked the outgoing staff members and welcomed the new ones. This year’s Lectio Brevis was presented by Dr Victor Ferrao, entitled ‘The other orientalism and the challenge and opportunities for the church in Goa. He challenged the audience to free their minds from the captivity of Hinduology. 
Sanchia wins award in Norwich
PANJIM: Sanchia Braganza of Tivai Vaddo, Calangute, successfully completed her MBBS at University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. She also received the Norwich Med Chi Betty Shaw Award 2013 for outstanding contribution to the medical school.
Sanchia has dedicated her achievement award to her grandfather Antonio Gregorio (Tony) Braganza for his 80th birthday on July 7.Sanchia also thanks Dr Rita Korgaonker of Porvorim and Goa Medical College Bambolim for their assistance during her Electives in Goa. She also gives thanks to her Nan Sabina Fernandes of Orel, Assolna for her continuing support and encouragement.  
Jagannath Rath Yatra on July 10
PANJIM: Shree Jagannath Temple Trust Goa and All Goa Oriya Association in association with ISKCON is celebrating annual rath yatra of Lord Shree Jagannath on July 10 at Panjim. This is the 4th consecutive year where the chariot will be pulled from Miramar to Mandovi ferry point.
The rath yatra will start from Miramar circle at 2.30 pm where Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar shall offer the first puja Member of Parliament Shripad Naik shall offer puja at Kala Academy. Other dignitaries and special invitees shall also offer puja during the course of the rath yatra. The yatra will culminate at ferry point at 6 pm with a final puja. Spiritual discourses, bhajan and kirtan and prasad at Goa Chamber of Commerce will follow between 6 pm to 9 pm.
HJS demonstration in Panjim
PANJIM: The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) is going to hold a demonstration at Panjim on July 7 to protest against step motherly treatment to tragedy affected Hindus in Uttarakhand and also to demand immediate assistance for the tragedy affected Hindus from the Uttarakhand government and the Central government.
HJS also demands to withhold screening of the biopic ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ which contains a denigrating song that hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus. The demonstrations will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm near Sree Maruti Temple, KTC bus stand, Panjim. 
School bus inaugurated 
PANJIM: Kadamba school bus was inaugurated at the hands of Sarpanch of Penha de Franca Blanche D’Souza and Deputy Sarpanch Gajanand Halankar from Penha de Franca on July 1, in the presence of 60 school going children, through MLA Rohan Khaunte. 
Khaunte said that his main aim to start the school bus was to serve the voters from his constituency, especially the children by providing them efficient and safe school bus transport at affordable costs. 
The programme was compered by Reagan Fernandes. 
Tribute to Aleixinho de Candolim
PANJIM: Tiatr Academy of Goa has organised a special function to pay tribute to the memory of Aleixinho de Candolim on his birth centenary July 9, at the Institute Menezes Braganza Auditorium, Panjim, at 7 pm.
John Claro Fernandes will be the chief guest and Siddhivinayak Naik, Member Secretary Kala Academy will be the guest of honour. Tomazinho Cardozo former president of TAG and Editor of Amcho Avaz will speak on the occasion and highlight the works of Aleixinho de Candolim. The function will be attended by Rosario Fernandes, son of late Aleixinho de Candolim and other family members. Kala Mogi, Candolim will present a special programme of songs and skits of Aleixinho de Candolim. The programme will feature popular tiatr artistes like Anthony San, Sheikh Amir, Succor de St Cruz, Irene and Tomazinho Cardozo. 
Aleixinho de Candolim was born on July 9. 1913, at Camotim waddo, Candolim. His original name was Joao Baptista Aleixinho Fernandes. He first stepped on the tiatr stage at the age of 16. At the age of 22 he produced his first tiatr, ‘Putanchea Duddvanchi As Ani Avoiche Disgras.
B B Sethi is GM of NABARD-Goa
PANJIM: B B Sethi has taken over the charge of General Manager/Officer-in-charge of Goa Regional office of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) after retirement of Dr S D Kulkarni. Sethi has a long experience of working in the states of Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Maharashtra and NABARD head office in Mumbai. 
AGM to distribute Ramzaan kit
PANJIM: The All Goa Muslim Educational and Social Welfare Society is organizing a Ramzaan kit distribution programme on July 7, at Madonna English School, Fatorda. More than 100 families have been earmarked as beneficiaries of the said kit. The kit will consist of rice, flour, sugar and oil. Miramar Trust donates to relief fund
PANJIM: Shree Marutirai Miramar Trust donated Rs 1 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Uttarkhand Relief Fund at a function at Shree Marutirai Devastan at Miramar. The president of the Trust Satish Naik presented the cheque to the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
Parrikar appreciated the trust for the noble deed. He said this would inspire others to follow suit. He said the government plans to identify area in Uttarakhand and rehabilitate that flood ravaged area. A team would be sent to that place by the end of July to study and identify the place and problems faced, he said. He said the Goa government had taken up a similar project in Gujarat when that state was hit by a major earthquake in 2001. Manguerish Pai Raikar was also present and compered the function. Satish Dhume, Treasurer, Suresh Kudchadkar and others were present. 
SRS Computers results 
PANJIM: Four workshops on Vedic Mathematics, one on memory techniques and six batches of computer courses were conducted for school students in April and May. A total of 150 students participated. The prize winners are Ameya Tilgul (computer courses) and Tanmay Naik (Vedic Maths). Certificates were distributed to all the participants. The faculty for the workshops were Sagar Sakordekar, Radha Sakordekar, Shobha Naik, Kalpita Shet Verekar and Reshma Hasmani. 
Managing Director of SRS Computers, Sagar Sakordekar informed that the 2nd all Goa Vedic Mathematics test for school students will be held on August 25.
Family planning workshops held 
MERCES: Diocesan Family Service Centre recently conducted Natural Family Planning (NFP) workshops at Curca and Chimbel. While 30 women from Bambolim, Curca and Talaulim (Santana) received training in NFP at Anganwadi, Curca, 20 women from Chimbel were taught the principles of ovulation method.
The resource persons at Curca were Agnelo Cardoso and Augusta Cardoso, while Dr Rupali Vernekar and Nurse Perpetua D’Souza handled the Chimbel group. The speakers informed the participants about the scientifically proven effectiveness of the method. They further reiterated that NFP is a healthy, safe and morally accepted method. They also helped them with charting exercise. Among those who attended the workshop was a pregnant woman, who received help to cope up with her pregnancy. Five women, who were in their pre-menopause, also received guidance. Another woman, who had difficulty bearing a child,        was counseled.   
Vocational stream at Guardian Angel
CURCHOREM: Stating that students are the arteries of an educational institution, Fr Kyriel D’Souza, Provincial Superior of Goa Province of Pilar Society, said students bring glory to the institution through good results and in turn the institution helps them to grow and become better citizens of the country. He was speaking at a function organized by Guardian Angel HSS, Curchorem, to celebrate 25 years of vocational stream which was started in the institution in 1988 by former Principal Fr Marshal Soares with Electronic Assembly Technician (EAT) course. Fr D’Souza congratulated the staff and students and urged them to work as a team. Earlier, the programme began with Eucharistic celebration with Fr D’Souza as main the celebrant along with other priests. Senior-most teacher of the vocational stream, Kalpana Badgeri, presented a brief history of vocational education in the institution. Teacher Joaquim Fernandes welcomed and compered the function, while Principal Fr Frank Mendes proposed the vote of thanks. 
Awareness on vector-borne diseases 
PONDA: In a bid to spread awareness among public on vector-borne disease, a team of Community Health Center (CHC) Ponda is visiting different localities in the city educating public of the precautionary measures to be taken during the rainy season. It may be recalled that CHC Ponda since mid-May this year recorded four dengue cases and according to CHC Ponda Health Officer Dr Nutan Dev, the situation is now normal. Dr Dev on Friday accompanied by the team of CHC Ponda visited Khadpabandh in the city as part of awareness drive conducted by CHC Ponda. According to the Dr Dev, awareness drives have been conducted in various parts and it will continue. “Much before monsoon, our team from CHC conducts awareness drives by personally visiting residential areas and also conducts workshops in panchayats and municipal area,”                    informed Dr Dev.
School felicitates SSC students 
SANGUEM: As part of Golden Jubilee celebration of Union High School Sanguem, the school management recently felicitated all its students who passed the SSC exams for the year 2013. Union HS had achieved cent per cent results for the fourth year in succession. Modern Education Society Chairman Dr Vishnu R Vaidya was the chief guest at the felicitation function, while Managing Trustee of Union High School Dharmanand Kossambe was the special invitee. Kossambe complimented the school staff and students for the achievement and bringing laurels to the school. School Headmaster Arun Kumar Salunke attributed the success for the fourth consecutive year to the hard work and dedication by both the teachers and the students. Of the 87 students who appeared for SSC examination, 15 obtained distinction, 27 got first class, 43 second class and 2 ATKT. All the successful students were presented merit certificates by the chief guest. PTA President Kiran Sanjay Raikar and School Managing Committee Treasurer Sandesh Kossambe were also present on the occasion.
Project for teachers introduced 
VASCO: Esther Sankhwalkar, Attorney of Chicalim Comunidade, in association with Dr Jennifer Lewis e Kamat and the Rotaract Club of Vasco introduced ‘The Green Rotunda’ project for teachers and students of seven schools from Vasco. The schools include Our Lady of Desterro High School, Mother of Mercy English High School, St Andrew’s Institute, Government High School Mangor, St Therese’s High School, Municipal High School and Regina Mundi. The project is centered on the revival of the Chicalim Park with the green vision of young citizens of Vasco. Later, a demonstration of the basics of potting mixtures (soil, coco peat, compost and sand mixture) was held for the group.
