CUNCOLIM: CES College Principal Dr Sanjay Sawant Dessai on Thursday said despite inadequate facilities, weapons, education and preparation, the heroic struggle waged by the brave heroes of Cuncolim against the mighty Portuguese in 1583 is of immense importance.

Addressing at the 438th anniversary of the Cuncolim First Revolt function organised by the Cuncolim Chieftains Memorial Trust and Cuncolim United Higher Secondary School, Dr Dessai said, “In this digital age there is no need to remain silent as the government has not appreciated this glorious history. We can spread this glorious history across world through social media.” He said it is possible to give dissertations, projects and exercises on this history to create awareness among the students.

He said, “It is necessary to maintain the dignity and honour of this fight. Today, education is the only means to fight against injustice and it is necessary to impart quality education.”

Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Laxman Naik said, “I am proud of the historic event of 1583. We have to learn a lesson of unity and togetherness from first war of independence. Together we can defeat any mighty enemy and this is what our forefathers taught us.”

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant greeted Cuncolkars on the occasion of 438th anniversary of Cuncolim revolt.

“Remembering the brave martyrs, the 15 chieftains of Goa’s historic Cuncolim Revolt that took place on 15th of July 1583. This was the first ever revolt against a foreign power that took place on our Indian soil. We will never forget their supreme sacrifice for our motherland,” he tweeted.
