A day before incident, MMC had told GSWMC about problems of waste mgmt

MARGAO: In an interesting development, the Margao Municipal Council had already written to the Goa State Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) about the problems regarding the waste management and had even sent a reminder on that note, a day before the wall collapse incident at Sonsoddo.

In its first letter to GSWMC, the MMC Chief Officer (CO) Agnelo Fernandes said there is around 15,000 tonnes of wet waste piled up in the existing 5,000 square metres shed (plant) at Sonsoddo.

“It is kindly requested to take up treatment of the piled up wet waste to avoid any unavoidable incident like fire due to stacking of wet waste and generation of combustible gases such as methane from the wet waste. Hope you will consider this request on priority,” Fernandes stated in the letter.

In their second letter to GSWMC, MMC had asked if they can send around 35-40 tonnes of wet waste is generated daily within its jurisdiction to the Cacora Solid Waste Treatment Plant, once it is functional.

The MMC officials also revealed that they are still awaiting the reply from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to grant permission for their earlier request to send 10 tonnes of waste generated in the town directly to the GSWMC’s Saligao Waste Treatment plant.

The officials stated that the Chief Minister will have to give his approval for the same.
