Around a year ago, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) had given an undertaking to the High Court that the civic body will go for a multi-storey parking lot at its vacant land at the old fish market. Towards that end, the municipality adopted a resolution around mid-2014 to utilise the golden jubilee grant amounting to Rs 3 crore for the construction of the parking lot and to seek the balance funds from the government.
Nearly six months down the line, the proposal appears moving at a snail’s pace. When Herald inquired with municipal officials on the status of the parking project, senior officials from the municipal technical section said that the file has gone to the Town and Country Planning Board for relaxation of height restrictions.
As per the designs worked out by the civic body, a total of 128 cars can be accommodated at the proposed parking lot. While the civic body has resolved to spend the golden jubilee grant of Rs 3 crore on the project, the civic authorities may be hard pressed to arrange the balance funds to finance the project.
Sources in the civic body said one way to arrange the balance money is to approach the government for the necessary funds – a question that may cause delay in the implementation of the project.
