In a memorandum submitted to the Vasco Regional Transport Office in-charge Abhay Naik on Thursday, AAP pointed out that the trucks were frequently being overloaded with cargo, including coal and bauxite, at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT). During transportation, the trucks usually spilled the cargo on the roads, leaving other motorists to face accidents.
“Every time the people protest against the movement of overloaded trucks, the authorities take some steps and the overloading stops. After some time the story become the same. What scares us is the weak bridge near Pai hospital. These overloaded trucks/containers – sometimes over 50 tons – use the bridge as it is the only way for heavy vehicles to reach MPT. We demanded the RTO to restrict the movement of trucks/containers until the four-lane highway work is completed, because if anything happens to the weak bridge, all of Vasco will suffer,” said Chandrashekar Vast, AAP Vasco Coordinator.
