PANJIM: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa on Tuesday gheraoed the chairperson and members of the Goa State Commission for Women (GSCW) over the commission’s tardiness in acting on crimes against women and children.
Party members stormed into Chairperson Advocate Vidhya Anand Shet Tanavade’s cabin on Tuesday afternoon inquiring why the commission had not followed up on the Siolim rape case, the Shirgao case where a teacher was accused of molesting several children and the more recent case where a complaint was filed against a senior journalist for sexual harassment.
The chairperson told the gathering that while she was keeping track of the Siolim case, she had not personally met with the victim or her mother but agreed to join AAP in meeting with them on Saturday when the party will organise a public meeting and candlelight vigil in Colvale.
“The commission has so far been non-existent and we had in the past taken to highlighting the issue with the Governor but nothing has been done. In the Siolim case, it has been over a month and the victim has still not received any justice. They have not even taken up the case or monitoring it,” said AAP ad-hoc secretary Valmiki Naik.
Tanavade on the other hand said she had inquired about the case with the investigating PI, but no report had been submitted to her.
“We had asked for the police to submit their report to us, but that was never given. I had tried to contact the mother but she did not respond. I will make sure that the victim receives justice and I will join AAP volunteers in visiting the victim and her mother on Saturday,” she said.
