AAP urges govt to declare seafarers as frontline workers

PANJIM: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has urged State government to declare Goan seafarers as frontline workers and to consider them on priority for vaccination.

Addressing media persons, AAP member Captain Venzy Viegas said despite directions from the Union Ministry for Shipping, the State government has failed to give priority to Goan seafarers for vaccination.

Viegas said the Director General of Shipping had even directed each port in the State to set up vaccination centres for the seafarers.

“Government has been identifying various categories as frontline worriers. We demand that seafarers too be declared as frontline workers,” he said adding that a memorandum in this regard is been submitted to the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant for necessary intervention and action.

AAP leader said the Shipping Lines, are not ready to let Goan seafarers on duty without getting vaccinated. He informed that several companies have already started replacing Goan or Indian seafarers with those from other countries.

Viegas pointed out that Kerala government has already declared seafarers from their State as frontline workers.
