VASCO: The traditional fish vendors from Vasco fish market on Wednesday threatened to take law in their hands if Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) made any further delay in taking action against migrant fish vendors.
They have also demanded action against those selling fish along the roads and also against shops/stalls illegally selling fish at wholesale rates at Khariwado and others selling fish on their vehicles.
A delegation of 50-odd traditional fish vendors, led by Vasco Fish Market Vendors’ Association President Carridade Pereira on Wednesday met MMC officials again and also Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, questioning them as to why no action was initiated against illegal sale of fish in Vasco, despite being assured.
“On several occasions in the past we had petitioned MMC to initiate action against all those engaged in illegal sale of fish in Vasco, but still many illegally sell fish in Vasco, which causes losses to traditional fish vendors,” Pereira said.
She said since no action was initiated despite tall promises and assurances, we met the municipality officials and have questioned then as why they failed to act and by when they will end this menace, adding that MMC officials sought time till February 20, to close down all such operations.
Meanwhile, during discussion with agitating fish vendors, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik informed that action has already being taken against roadside vendors.
“As promised, we have already taken action against those illegally selling fish on the roadside. Similarly, with regards to those selling fish in stalls, since municipality in past had issued permission to one such stall at Khariwado we have decided to follow the procedure to revoke the permission.”
