PANJIM: Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) will go ahead with signing of lease agreement with traders and to bring more areas under pay parking in a bid to mobilise revenues.

After chairing the CCP ordinary meeting, Mayor Rohit Monserrate said that the CCP had already lost Rs 20 crore due to delay in signing agreement with the shopkeepers and traders in the Panjim municipal market. “There are nearly 400 traders in the new market but as per the records of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) there are only 160 traders and the CCP will first sign agreement with these registered traders”, he said.

Monserrate also said that nearly 50 per cent of the citizens were not paying their house tax and commercial taxes regularly and that the Corporation has now formed special teams to recover pending house tax and commercial taxes which was to the tune of Rs 56 crore.

The meeting also approved a proposal to introduce phase IV pay parking only at three places ie near the Miramar Circle, near Sulabh Toilet at Miramar beach and near Maruti temple at Miramar.

During the meeting, Surendra Furtado made some valuable suggestions regarding the signing of a lease agreement with the traders for a period of 30 years. He sought to know whether such long lease agreement can be granted by the CCP under its Act, since earlier it was mentioned that the CCP has power to give premises on a leave and licence basis .
