Agent ‘grabs’ Rs 50,000 from 2 Ladli beneficiaries; assaults one for not paying commission amount

The victim, who sustained a head injury, shifted from Ponda Sub District Hospital to SGDH, Margao, for further treatment; Ponda Police detain the lady agent

PONDA: In a bizarre incident, a lady, acting as an agent, “grabbed” Rs 50,000 from two Ladli Laxmi beneficiaries and allegedly assaulted one of them for not paying half of the scheme amount as commission.

The woman, who sustained a head injury, was shifted to Ponda Sub District Hospital and later to South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao for further treatment. In this connection, Ponda Police detained the agent for assaulting the beneficiary and further investigation is on.

According to the victim’s mother, on Monday, the lady acting as agent, assaulted her married daughter for not providing 50 per cent of Ladli Laxmi amount as commission and in fit of anger, hit her head on the wall.

She said the accused lady assured her two married daughters to get scheme amount of Rs one lakh sanctioned, but demanded 50 per cent of scheme amount as commission for conducting all formalities right from filling the application, getting necessary documents including Residence Certificate, Aadhaar Card and others.

The victim’s mother said the accused kept all documents of applicants in her possession till the government sanctioned the money to the beneficiaries recently. The applicants had agreed to pay 50 per cent commission to the accused to complete all the formalities.

She said, “My daughters were married six years ago. The accused lady approached them and assured them to provide the scheme amount by completing all the formalities. Recently, the lady told my daughters they have received the sanction letters and that they have to visit the bank to withdraw the amount.”

She said, “One of my daughters paid Rs 30,000 as commission and the other paid Rs 20,000.  The accused lady was unhappy about not getting half the amount of commission and in a fit of anger assaulted one of my daughters.” 

Social worker Tara Kerkar demanded that the police initiate action and provide justice to the victim. She said half of the scheme amount cannot be charged for assistance.

Meanwhile, Ponda PI Vijaykumar Chodankar said, “We are conducting investigation into the matter and in case we come across any evidence of payment of commission further action would be taken.”
