CANACONA: The Akhil Goa Kshetriya Pagi Samaj (AGKPS) has served an ultimatum of 48 hours to arrest the culprits involved in the rape and murder of Vijaya S Pagi, of Rajbag-Tarir, before they launch an agitation from Monday onwards.
Shortly after chairing an emergency meeting, AGKPS President Santosh Pagi along with other office bearers said that SP (south) Prabhudessai has been informed that if police fails to arrest the culprits involved in the heinous crime within 48 hours, they would stage an agitation to condemn the Goa Police’s failure in protecting the citizens.
Taking the threat further, AGKPS Vice President Nyanesh Naik added: “It has become a safety issue for women of Canacona and not particularly of one community. Hence, people from all over the taluka, and not only from the Pagi Samaj, will join the agitation.”
They pointed out that the Mastimoll area surrounding the crime site has not one but as many as 4-5 educational institutions, including an ITI, Shri Mallikarjun Collage, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, and the Government Higher Secondary School, all within a few kilometres of Canacona police station, where hundreds of girls are students.
“The State government, and the police in particular, should devise some ways to protect women or should conduct day-to-day surveillance at isolated areas. There are several similar isolated places, like the one where the murder took place, also located in Gaondongrim, Cotigao and Galgibaga, and police should step up their patrolling to avoid similar incidences,” said Treasurer Ajay Pagi.
Dnyeshwari Pagi, Sudarshan Pagi, Nandu Pagi, Gokuldas Pagi were the other executive members who also spoke to the media during the interaction.
