CANACONA: Forty technical officers of agricultural department visited Canacona farmers to have first hand information about development made by them.
The visit was organised by Directorate of Agriculture on Wednesday and was lead by Chintamani Perni, assistant director.
All the ground level officers visited the progressive farmers of Canacona taluka who are following latest technology. The officers visited the farm of Prasad Purso Velip an awardee of Krishi Ratna of State government at Yeda, Cotigao, who has cultivated ladyfingers in five acres with drip irrigation and plastic mulching.
Velip had cultivated hybrid chillies in the last season and had harvested 51 tonnes of Syngenta varieties of chillies which was supplied to Goa Horticulture dept with a turnover of Rs 15 lakh. Beside, Velip is also cultivating cluster beans on three acres, ginger in 7.5 acres and sugarcane in eight acres.
The team of officials also visited orchid flower cultivation in Polyhouse of Daya T Velip at Yeda, Cotigao, the farmer has about one acre area under Polyhouse and has cultivated Orchids, Sonia red and white, totally there are 22 polyhouses that grow Orchids in Canacona and the production is sold locally as well as in Bangalore market.
Then the officers visited Ajit Poi of Khavat, Paiginim who is a Krishi Vibhushan awardee. He is cultivating Gerbera flower and ginger in his Polyhouse; he is also growing dragon fruit, pineapple and bush pepper and now planning to start industry to facilitate value addition for different fruits available in the village.
The visit ended at mushroom factory at Batpal where brown button mushrooms cultivation is recently started mainly for export.
