AITUC demands rise in minimum wages for workers

PANJIM: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Wednesday demanded minimum wages of Rs 750 per day plus VDA for unskilled category; Rs 825 per day plus VDA for semi-skilled category; Rs 910 per day plus VDA for skilled category and Rs 1000 per day plus VDA for highly skilled category.

Addressing a press conference at Panjim, AITUC general secretary Christopher Fonseca said that minimum wages in comparable States were more than double the wages applicable to Goa. States like Delhi and Kerala had decisively revised minimum wages, he added. 

According to Fonseca, at present the Consumer Price Index points at AAICPI (1960 = 100) as on October 2021 was at an average of 8240 points ie a further increase of more than 2123 points from the time the statutory minimum wages were first notified in March 2016. Since then there has been no revision in minimum wages, he said adding that there has been unprecedented steep rise in the prices of essential commodities, food items in the State.
