PANJIM: The Aldona Primary Health Centre is hosting a new Alcoholics Anonymous group in a move to help around 15 to 20 alcoholics who are introduced to detoxification every month by the doctors at the centre.
The group was inaugurated at PHC Aldona by the Medical Officer, Dr Manuelina Faleiro along with other members who helped start the new group and encouraged them in their endeavour. The need was felt after doctors of PHC Aldona, who detoxify around 15 to 20 Alcoholic Dependent Syndrome patients a month on an average since June 2013 noticed that they required a support group to help them to abstain from alcohol.
The Aldona group meets every Thursday in the PHC’s conference hall at 6 pm.
Alcoholics Anonymous is an international mutual aid fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. AA states that its “primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.”
With this motto in mind the new group will endeavour to help those in the grip of alocholism to leave the habit for good.
