OLD GOA: A Goan priest and former official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) passed away in the USA on Monday.
Fr Thomas d’Aquino Sequeira (60), who hailed from Corlim, had retired last year as deputy secretary general of CBCI and was in the US for doctoral studies, besides helping the St Bernard’s Catholic Church in Tracy, California.
According to reports, Fr Sequeira was hospitalized two months ago with an advanced stage of colon cancer and had undergone surgery and chemotherapy. He breathed his last am in a hospital at California, the CBCI office said in a statement.
Besides serving as CBCI deputy secretary general from 2006 to 2012, Fr Sequeira was the former rector of Rachol Seminary and had also served as director of Biblical Centre in the archdiocese. He was also on a team that translated the Bible into Konkani in Roman script.
Fr Sequeira was active in the music circle while he was in Goa and had been a founder member of the Goan folk troupe, ‘Gavana’.
The body is expected to be flown in from the US to Goa within the next few days. Incidentally, his mother had passed away in Goa at the age of 92 on August 18.
