PORVORIM: Former MP Amrut Kansar on Monday described Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar as the chief architect of India’s constitution who fought for the right of Dalits and other socially backward classes and also fought to eradicate social evils like untouchability.
He was speaking at a programme in Mapusa, organized by Mapusa Municipal Council to celebrate the 123rd birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.
“Dr Ambedkar opted for the parliamentary system of government as he strongly believed that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. If civil society remains indifferent to the political processes, our liberty itself will be in danger,” said Kansar.
“The values expressed in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution are expressed as the objectives of the constitution. The Preamble prescribes liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship as one of the core values. These have to be assured to every member of all the communities.”
“The preambles of the constitution of Portugal are nearly as same as that of the Indian Constitution,” Kansar added.
Former speaker Surendra Sirsat stated that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar strived to secure social, economic and political equality for all citizens of the country.
“Special provisions were, therefore, incorporated in the Constitution to encourage and promote their economic, educational and social development,” he said.
MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari highlighted the achievements of Dr Ambedkar.
Earlier, the bust of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was garlanded by Sirsat and Falari and flowers were later offered by the dignitaries.
On the occasion, prizes to winners of the Rangoli competition organised by MMC were given away by the guests.
