Says contract farming will only displace the local farmers; also says revenue courts and civil courts function differently

MARGAO: Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik on Monday said that the Amendment to the Goa Tenancy Act will adversely affect the farmers and the common man in the State.
He further said that the provision of contract farming will only displace the local farmers and bring in the corporate bodies in the State’s agriculture sector.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Republic Day function at Margao, the Rajya Sabha MP said the formalities in the civil courts under the Civil Procedure Code will not give justice to the tenants seeking rights under the Act. “The government Amendment to the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act is not in the interest of the farmers. Powers from the mamlatdar courts have been given to the civil courts under the amendment. But, we have to realise that the civil courts are guided by the Civil Procedure Code. Matters before the revenue courts headed by the mamlatdars are being viewed differently. This will not be a position in the civil courts,” Naik added.
The Rajya Sabha MP has underlined the need to launch an agitation to force the government to roll back the amendment. “The amendment has also given the right to the corporates to take over the farming land. This will only end up in displacing the poor farmers,” Naik said.
