MAPUSA: The Anjuna-Caisua panchayat conducted a surprise inspection at hotels and restaurants within its jurisdiction to check if they were segregating their garbage at source. Three restaurants were found mixing garbage and an individual was caught dumping garbage in the open. The culprits were fined under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996 by the panchayat secretary in the presence of Sarpanch Patrick Savio Almeida.
The sarpanch told Herald that the inspection was carried out by the panch members.
“Only if the garbage is segregated properly, it will possible to process and dispose it efficiently. We conducted a surprise inspection of some hotels and restaurants in our village. During the inspection we spotted three restaurants that were found mixing their garbage and an individual was caught dumping garbage. Accordingly, the culprits have been fined,” said Almeida.
The panchayat is requesting the tourists, residents, owners of restaurants and hotels to abide by the rules and practise segregation of garbage. They have also appealed to the people to keep the village clean by not dumping their garbage in open spaces or mixing the garbage.
Meanwhile, the panchayat also inspected the roads falling in its jurisdiction and has shortlisted those that need urgent repairs.
Almeida told Herald that they are back in action and working on fixing the village roads.
“Our cleanliness drive along the roadside and public places carried out during Ganesh Chaturthi was a success. On Monday, we inspected all the possible roads in the jurisdiction of Anjuna-Caisua that need immediate repair. We have also sent the various photos of roads along with the latitude and longitude of each pothole to the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister on WhatsApp. A detailed report was prepared along with pictures and forwarded to the PWD Minister and the department on September 17 for the needful to be done,” Almeida said.
