MAPUSA: To coincide with the day of Gandhi’s martyrdom, a protest was held on Thursday at Hutatma Chowk Mapusa to oppose CAA, NRC and NPR.
The protest was organised by Goa Alliance Against CAA-NRC-NPR where the preamble of the Constitution was read out in different India languages.
Addressing the protestors, organiser Rahul Mhambre said,” BJP government is telling the people to be Hindu or Muslim but are not telling the people to be human. The Citizenship Amendment Act is enacted to create vote banks. The preamble teaches us the value of fraternity, brotherhood, secularism and democracy. However, the government is dividing us on the basis of on religion and caste.”
Another organiser referred to two questions raised by former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan: “First, why only three countries are chosen when India has several countries bordering it; especially Afghanistan that does not even share geographical boundaries. Secondly, why only six communities are selected to benefit under CAA? This is discrimination on basis of religion and violation of Article 14 of Indian Constitution which applies not only to citizens but all those who are residing in India.”
Earlier, an anti-CAA meeting scheduled in Mapusa was called off after permission for the same revoked at last moment.
