MARGAO: A mega rally and a public meeting was organised on Thursday in Margao to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The rally was jointly organised by Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), Concerned Citizens for Goa (CCFD) and National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (Goa Unit).
Large number of people turned up for the rally to “Save Democracy – Save Constitution”, filling the entire open space opposite the new St Xavier Chapel, at Fatorda.
The rally started at Fatorda stadium and calumniated in a public meeting at the ground opposite the SGPDA which is adjacent to the St Francis Xavier’s Chapel.
The public meeting was addressed by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao, Claude Alvares, Ramesh Gawas, Iftikar Shaikh and other eminent thinkers.
Addressing the meeting, Alvares said, “Gandhiji was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, and with this CAA another assassination is being done and this time it is on the Constitution. Not a single change was made with respect to any religious base.  My sincere hope is that the Supreme Court will strike down this Act.”
President of Goa Muslim Forum Iftikar Shaikh said, “We understand today that was not just a murder of Gandhiji but also of his ideas. The voice of Muslims is of Gandhiji. This is not the fight of Muslims; this is to protect India and our Constitution.”
Ramesh Gawas said, “You are together here to support the protestors at shaheen bagh and the people arrested in Orissa and also to show the Home Minister how insane he is.”
