VASCO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has urged the State government to restore the dilapidated fort at Sada and promote tourism. This is in tune with the restoration of Forts becoming the new political narrative.
Amonkar said that the historic fort at Sada in Mormugao constituency was in ruins, dilapidated, and looking for attention. The fort facing the Arabian Sea also has a cave that leads to smaller forts at the base of the hill in an area called `Shyam Bhaat.’
According to a listing note on goayell.com, “The Sada Fort was constructed to monitor the movements of ships into the Zuari river. Soon after its construction, the fort was abandoned. At the base of the ruined fort is a picturesque beach, which can be reached via steps leading down the steep rock. The fort played an important role during the year 1685 when the Maratha king Sambhaji marched in with his army to capture the place. The Portuguese, worried about the safety of their women and children, used the fort as a safe haven”
“I have appealed to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to take up restoration of the fort at Sada because a portion of this historic Fort has already been taken over by Mormugao Port Authority and there is no proper access to the fort,” Amonkar said adding that Chief Minister has assured him that the government would take up the restoration work and open the access for the people.
The Mormugao MLA also suggested that the Sada fort after renovation be converted into a tourist spot as it would help in boosting the economy of the Mormugao taluka.
