CUNCOLIM: The Assolna special gram sabha objected to a mobile tower in the village within a radius of 1 km from residential area, on Sunday.
It may be recalled that the mobile tower was approved in the previous gram sabha meeting.
The villagers also asked for a site inspection as there is fear among the people of Assolna that one more tower would be erected in the village.
After discussion, the panchayat agreed to hold a site inspection with the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
The special gram sabha was attended by a large number of people and was convened after the people of Assolna had earlier given representation to the panchayat with around 200 signatures.
Gram sabha member Frederick Borges, who had opposed the mobile tower in the previous gram sabha, said, “This is a very sensitive issue and the panchayat must announce in the church before they take any decision on the subject matter.”
Borges said that the previous gram sabha approved the mobile tower, as there were less number of members as compared to the special gram sabha held on Sunday.
It is to be noted that the Sarpanch, Pedrina Cardozo, was absent during the last gram sabha meeting.
In addition to the mobile tower, the garbage issue was also taken up for discussion. At the gram sabha, the sarpanch said that it was difficult to collect the garbage generated at the Thursday bazaar as it was wet and heavy; therefore, she sought the opinion of the people whether the market could be closed down.
After a discussion on the subject, it was decided the garbage management committee would discuss the further course of action.
There were suggestions that the panchayat provide labour so that the committee could go house to house to dig two potholes and educate the people on how to segregate the wet and dry garbage. They felt that action is very important than organising awareness camps.
