PONDA: The work to shift 950 and 750 mm dia main water pipelines located on the road embankment at Curti supplying water from OPA to Tiswadi and parts of Ponda Taluka has commenced finally.
It’s been four days that heavy machinery and several labourers have been engaged to shift pipelines by digging up trenches.
It may be recalled that since the pipelines had turned weak; last year, the government had directed the contractor to shift them to the other side of road during widening of National Highway. Unfortunately, due to the delay and with heavy rains triggering a landslide in the area, the pipelines collapsed last month causing major water crisis in Tiswadi and parts of Ponda taluka.
Besides residents of Tiswadi and patients in Goa Medical College who were hit the most, locals of Old Goa, Cumbarjua, Marcel and parts of Ponda taluka too suffered on account of the water crisis. It took eight days for the authorities to complete the restoration work with the locals raising doubts on the skill of the engineers as a whopping Rs 30 lakh was spent.
