Authorities begin drive against black spots, fine people dumping garbage

MARGAO: In a bid to curb health hazards, authorities are cracking down on roadside garbage dumping in Davorlim and other areas across Salcete taluka, imposing fines on those responsible. On Friday, officials from the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) conducted an enforcement drive targeting illegal dumping at Mugalli Junction in Sao Jose De Areal, Maruti Mandir in Davorlim, and Rawanfond Circle in Aquem.

On Friday, the authorities fined violators under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act, imposing Rs 2,500 per violation for waste dumping. A total of 14 cases were booked during the drive, marking a significant effort to curb the nuisance and safeguard public health.

“We’ve been complaining about this issue for several months, but the authorities have yet to address it effectively. People and business operators, including those in the chicken-butchery business, are still seen dumping their waste here,” said Roshni Naik, a resident of Davorlim. She remarked that while the enforcement drive is a step in the right direction, more effective measures are needed to keep the area clean.

Naik also highlighted that individuals from outside the village are often observed dumping waste during the late evening hours.
