CALANGUTE: The Baga road has started sinking again with the heavy rain. The sinking has now become an annual affair in the monsoon ever since the roads in Calangute were dug for the sewerage pipeline network, work on which started in 2013. Though largely complete, the sewerage system is yet to be commissioned.
The Baga road stretch is the worst affected, with the area around the sewerage chambers located every few metres gradually sinking and caving in.

“The reason for this is the sewerage pipeline work was carried out haphazardly,” local NGO Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) President Premanand Divkar, who resides in the area, said.
According to Divkar, the Baga road was originally a nullah which was filled and made a road.
“Since it’s a low-lying area, all the water flows there and goes towards Baga River, from the side of the road and it gets accumulated at some spots. Water also enters the sewerage chambers and pipeline, and then overflows,” locals said.
Last year also the road, probably the most popular tourist shopping zone in the Calangute-Candolim tourism belt, had sunk in around the sewerage chambers due to the rains and water-logging, resulting in a number of accidents involving tourists, following which CCF members and locals had held black flag protests.
