VASCO: Raising concerns over the safety of the people, NGO Goa First has complained to Health Secretary, Chief Secretary and South Goa Collector of the pathetic conditions prevailing outside Urban Health Centre/STD Clinic at Baina.
Parshuram Sonurlekar of “Goa First” said, “Many people visit this urban health centre regularly but during monsoon it is noticed that the lane connecting the UHC is clogged with rainwater and mud. The unhygienic area outside the UHC condition could lead to several diseases.”
“The Mormugao taluka has been epicentre of diseases such as dengue, malaria and cholera. Despite knowing this, the Health Department has purposely kept this UHC in an unhygienic condition to prevent people from visiting the centre,” he alleged.
He claimed that the NGO has noticed that no doctors are available. Most doctors attached to the UHC are seen at the Chicalim Sub District Hospital for their own comfort and recommend the patients visiting the UHC to SDH. Most people visiting the UHC are poor. The basic role of the health officer is to maintain the premises and its surroundings clean.
“Nearby residents are made to suffer due to the prevailing unhygienic conditions. The Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has failed to set an example to the people of Mormugao and Goa by not keeping the UHC surroundings clean. We fear that if no action is taken then this could lead to the spread of vector-bone diseases,” Sonurlekar said.
