Bakery, café owners file police plaints against rumour-mongers

PANJIM: The Panjim city’s prominent bakery and cake shop has lodged a complaint against unknown person/s for allegedly circulating fake news claiming it is unsafe due to COVID-19. 

The proprietor of Geeta Bakery has stated that unknown miscreants have been using the social media to spread the rumour. 

“Some unknown miscreants are spreading the rumour that Geeta Bakery is sealed and its staff has been tested COVID positive. However, this is a hoax and there is no truth to it,” the letter to Panjim Police stated. 

Urging the police to take action against the person/s responsible for the fake news; the establishment has urged the people to not fall prey to the hoax.  

Another pastry shop Pastry Cottage has lodged a similar complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell alleging that miscreants are spreading rumour about COVID positive case in the shop. 

The proprietor has also denied any such instance at their shop. 

In the wake of these two incidents, some of the city based eatery shops and restaurants have filed a joint complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell seeking action against the rumour mongers. 

“We strongly believe the fake news is being mischievously circulated with the sole intention to create fear in the minds of the people of Goa. Such fake and malicious news also cause a lot of economic damage and hardship to our businesses and reputation in these difficult times,” the letter reads as. 

The police have begun an investigation into the complaints.
