MAPUSA: The Mapusa Merchants’ Association has filed a memorandum to Deputy Superintendent of Police, North Goa, requesting him to take stern action against the increasing menace of Lamani hawkers & beggars in Mapusa market.
Since the Dy Superintendent was not available in his Office, they submitted it to PI Tushar Lotlikar of Mapusa police station.
The issue was previously highlighted during an interaction with police officials at Mapusa Police Station requesting them to take severe actions against Lamanis hawkers and beggars present in the market.
These Lamanis and beggars cause nuisance by troubling, following and pestering the foreign tourists visiting the market with intention to mislead and chase foreigners due to which the tourists avoid visiting the market.
Since the tourist season has just begun, more and more Lamanis hawkers and beggars are seen loitering around the market. They sit and also sleep on the footpath causing inconvenience to pedestrians.
The chairman of Mapusa Merchants’ Association Ashish Shirodkar said, “The presence of these beggars and their begging pattern creates bad image of Mapusa market. I think there is an organisation which drops and picks them up everyday. It has become something like Mumbai’s begging system.”
He further said the PI has assured to warn these people to stop their activities. Today he instructed his officers to conduct a drive at the market.
