Bardez, Pernem still ‘powerless’

Electricity Dept yet to restore supply in these talukas

MAPUSA/PERNEM: The residents of Bardez and Pernem talukas continued to bear the brunt of Cyclone Tauktae as on Monday too both the talukas were still without power supply.

It may be recalled that the cyclone created havoc in Bardez and Pernem uprooting trees, damaging houses and snapping electricity lines plunging both the talukas into darkness. 

However, the Electricity Department employees were yet to restore the electricity supply which was disrupted early Sunday.

The cyclone accompanied by heavy showers and gusty winds kept the Police, Fire and Electricity Department personnel on their toes as they were busy clearing the uprooted trees, snapped electricity wires and blocked roads.

The cyclone which caused destruction in Bardez claimed the life of a 34-year-old Sheetal Patil at Mazalwada-Anjuna. 

According to sources, Sheetal had gone to a well to fetch water when a coconut tree crashed on her resulting in her instant death.

Meanwhile, Pernem, Mapusa and Pilerne fire stations were busy throughout Sunday and Monday clearing the uprooted trees in different parts of Pernem and Bardez which caused losses in lakhs of rupees.

Tree uprooting incidents caused traffic blockade at various important routes, waterlogging was reported on Shirgal-Dhargal road with tree branches crashed on houses.

Pernem PI Jivba Dalvi along with his team with the assistance of Pernem Fire Station staff cleared most trees from the roads in Arambol, Korgao, Mandrem and Tuem. 

The received information that three huge trees had uprooted along the national highway at Ugvem, Pernem which disrupted traffic movement wherein vehicles laden with oxygen cylinders and other essentials were left stranded. 

As the fire station staff was busy clearing the trees in Arambol, PI Dalvi along with his team rushed to Ugvem and arranged an earthmover to clear the trees from the highway.
