MARGAO: Taking serious note of the issue being highlighted by Herald, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco urged the government to address the issue of begging at the earliest as it is tarnishing the image of our brand Goa both nationally and internationally.
In a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, he mentioned about the news story highlighted by Herald on its October 3 edition, stating “Is Goa becoming a beggars hub?”
Reginaldo said that Auda Viegas of Bailancho Ekvott has expressed agony on the insensitivity of the authorities in tackling the woes of begging.
Ruling at the lack of reintegration of beggars in the State of Goa, Viegas has suggested a comprehensive plan for both physically challenged and able-bodied beggars that there is an urgent need of a rehabilitation centre for street dwellers and beggars and a separate body to tackle this issue in the State and a helpline to complain about the same. Able-bodied persons can be provided with skills and physically handicapped people can be directed to homes set up for them.
