BELGAUM: Bishop of Sindhudurg Allwyn Barreto has urged Maharashtra government to understand the needs of the minorities in Sindhudurg Diocese and provide them their rights along with other minorities in the state.
He was speaking at a rally of Catholic minorities at Kudal in Sindhudurg on Sunday. Over 5,000 Konkani-speaking Catholics of Goan origin, who have settled there, took part. Maharashtra Minister for Industries Narayan Rane, MP Nilesh Rane and elected representatives were present for the rally.
“We do not have a minority office or a Catholic representative from the district of Sindhudurg. The Catholics still do not enjoy the benefits of pre-metric scholarship, post-metric scholarship, graduation scholarship or scholarship to study abroad. The Catholics find great difficulty in getting educational and business loans,” Bishop Allwyn stated urging Maharashtra government to look at the minorities more seriously.
Fr Nelson Machado, John Noronha, Peter Dantas, Victor Dantas and Clara D’Souza and Catholic leaders were present on the occasion.
