BJP names third key govt office after party loyalist

PANIM: What’s in a name, one may ask. Plenty, if it happens to be the name used by the ruling political party to identify a State government building.

In a bid to stamp its identity on government buildings in the State, the BJP on Thursday named yet another building after a member espousing its party ideals.
Mindful that questions would be raised about the decision to name the Directorate of Planning, Statistics and Evaluation building as the ‘Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Bhavan’, Parrikar said Deendayal Upadhyay was more than just a member of BJP or Jana Sangh. “The building was named not because he was a leader of BJP or Jana Sangh, but because he was a scholar, visionary and a great thinker. Every great personality who has made significant contribution to the progress of the country needs to be remembered,” added Parrikar, while speaking after inaugurating the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Bhavan at Porvorim.
This is the third major government complex named after a politician linked to the BJP. Earlier, the State government had named the South Goa Collectorate after former minister late Matanhy Saldanha and the multipurpose stadium at Bambolim after Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, founder of Jana Sangh and RSS, a strong Hindutva outfit.
Following a controversy over naming of the multipurpose stadium after Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had justified the decision and stated that Mukherjee was a great patriot who had lost his life
in a battle to restore Kashmir
to India.
