MARGAO: Opposing the proposed National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Cuncolim, Adv John Monteiro on Tuesday warned Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik and the BJP-led government of an agitation if they fail to drop the proposal immediately.
He also dared Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to hold a second opinion poll in Goa to ascertain the views and wishes of the people of Goa on the airport issue.
Addressing media persons, Monteiro said that people of Cuncolim are already suffering due to the pollution from industries, adding that the people will not allow Cuncolim constituency to be a dumping site at the instance of any political parties. “If at all the government wants welfare and betterment of Cuncolim, I welcome an ITI with reservation of jobs and seats for people from the constituency,” he added. “I want to send a message to the Cuncoim MLA and interested persons who welcome the NIT project not to dump unwanted projects on Cuncolim. Cuncolim constituency is not a garbage dumping site. Any such projects will be opposed tooth and nail by Cuncolkars,” he warned. He recalled that the BJP mandal and present MLA were totally opposed to the NIT project in Cuncolim when it was proposed during the Congress regime, while demanding to know the reasons that prompted local MLA and the BJP mandal to welcome the project again.
