BJP women wing left red-faced on Babush’s charges

PANJIM: The BJP women wing faced a major embarrassment when taking a dig at Congress’ candidate Atanasio Babush Monserrate’s criminal antecedents boomeranged on them.
The wing’s president Kunda Chodankar and her team were caught in a tight spot at a press conference called to campaign against Monserrate, who has criminal charges like the alleged rape of a juvenile girl and mob attack on Panjim police station.
Chodankar raised apprehensions on the safety of women if Monserrate “is elected in the upcoming by-polls by default.” She however had no reply to repeated media questions on why the the women’s wing did not voice against its very own party for appointing Monserrate as Chairman of the Greater Panjim Planning & Development Authority.
This was followed by a verbal spat between Kunda and some media persons until former Mayor Vaidehi Naik intervened and tried to calm the situation. On being asked again, Naik agreed that government’s decision to appoint Monserrate to the PDA was not correct. “It’s my personal opinion,” Naik added.
