BJP youth wing wants reversal of GU decision on Kare college

PANJIM: Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha has demanded that Goa University reverse its decision about reducing the intake of first year students at Kare College of Law from 60 to 38 this academic year.

The office-bearers met GU Vice Chancellor Dr Satish Shetye on Thursday urging that students should not suffer for the college’s fault.
“The college should be held accountable for violating the prescribed norms. GU should impose heavy penalty rather than reducing the number of seats, because this decision will affect the future of the students,” BJPYM general secretary Sanket Arsekar told Herald.
He stated the VC agreed to call for an Academic Council meeting on Monday where the BJPYC will be allowed to represent the problem. Earlier, the karyakartas along with some students had marched to the university but were denied entry by police personnel. A delegation was thereafter allowed to meet the VC to discuss the matter.
The varsity has restricted intake capacity after its Academic Council found that the Margao college, despite warnings, continued to bypass norms by admitting students above the allotted strength.
“As against the allocated class strength of 60, Kare College of Law admitted 76, 80, 71 students at the beginning of the academic years 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15, respectively. Each year the AC expressed its unhappiness at the violation. However, the college continued its illegal act,” GU Registrar Y V Reddy had said speaking to Herald last week.
For the academic year 2015-16, the college admitted 82 students in its 3-year LLB program and as such, the GU decided to reduce students’ strength to 38 this academic year.
