Bloodbath on Salcete roads due to fatal accidents

Spate of accidents shows the vulnerability of commuters; inability of authorities in preventing accidents

MARGAO: Blood is getting spilled on Salcete’s roads as vehicle accidents are sniffing out lives.

On January 16 this year at around 10.15 pm at Gandhi Road, Raia, in a tragic accident, a couple died on the spot at Maina-Curtorim after a four-wheeler rammed into their two-wheeler from behind.

The deceased were identified as 35-year-old Kennedy D’Costa and his 28-year-old wife Novela D’Costa. They are survived by a 10-year-old daughter.

In the second incident two police constables attached to Colva Police Station on duty were killed at Per Seraulim.

More recently, last week four persons including two brothers died when their car went off the Zuari Bridge and fell in the river.

On wee hours of Monday, an elderly couple died in another tragic accident.

These are not just isolated cases, but a larger indicator of how vulnerable the commuters in South Goa are and the inability of the authorities to regulate traffic effectively.

Police record shows that for the first five months this year 18 fatal accidents were reported in Salcete taluka besides another 27 minor accidents in which over 35 persons were injured.

In the year 2021, 72 mishaps were recorded of which, of which 67 have been detected. There were 21 fatal accidents and 51 minor accidents.

Of the 21 fatal accidents, six were reported in Maina Curtorim Police Station jurisdiction, while two were reported in Fatorda, six in Cuncolim, five in Colva and two in Margao, the police said.

The police also said that of the 51 minor accidents, 18 were reported in Maina Curtorim Police Station jurisdiction, 12 in Cuncolim, eight in Fatorda, six in Colva and seven in Margao.

As per the police records, in the year 2020 total number of 28 fatal accidents were reported in Salcete besides 32 minor accidents.

Out of 28 fatal accidents, seven were reported in Margao, six in Maina Curtorim, one in Colva, five in Cuncolim and nine in Fatorda.

In 2019, 70 persons had died in road accidents in South Goa district. There were another 141 minor accidents registered, reveal police records.

Out of these 70 fatal accidents, a maximum number of 11 fatal accidents were reported in Maina Curtorim, 10 fatal accidents each at Vasco and Verna, eight fatal accidents in Ponda, seven each in Canacona and Fatorda and five in Cuncolim.
