Budget likely on March 24

Speaker to impose time limit to ensure daily Assembly business ends by 7pm; 450 starred, 753 unstarred questions already received

PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant is set to table the State Budget 2021-22 on March 24, the first day of the four-week long State Legislative Assembly session, during which discussions on and passing of the financial statement will also take place. This will be the last Budget of the current government.

Also, taking a lesson from the winter session held in January, wherein the day’s proceedings continued till midnight, Speaker Rajesh Patnekar has decided to strictly impose a time limit to ensure that the daily business ends by 7.00pm, with no extension thereafter.

The Speaker on Monday addressed members of Press Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Goa Legislative Assembly.

He said that the Budget session will be from March 24 to April 16, with three public holidays in between aside from the weekends. The House will not sit on March 29 on account of Holi, April 1 being Maundy Thursday and April 2 Good Friday. The House will therefore sit for 13 days this session.

Till date, 450 starred and 753 unstarred questions have been received, with the last date for submission of questions being March 17. Also, 15 private members resolutions have also been received by the Secretary of Legislature Affairs.

“The Chief Minister will table the Budget on March 24 most likely,” the Speaker said adding that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) will meet on March 17, to list out the business during the session.

Patnekar said, “There will be discussion on Budget, Demands and Vote on Account for one month will be taken,” he said.

The Speaker added that he would be imposing time restrictions on daily proceedings of the House. “Last session, the business went on till midnight. The members of the House need to take care. I will ensure that the session ends latest by 7pm daily,” he said.
