MAPUSA: Calangute Youth Congress Committee on Monday gheraoed and confronted Assistant Engineer (AE) of the Electricity Department, Calangute section, over hefty electricity bills and delayed billing cycle period, resulting in inconvenience to the consumers.
The Congress also questioned as to how long the Calangute locals will have to suffer with exhorbitant power bills and taxes.
Highlighting that the Calangute locals are already suffering due to COVID-19 npandemic, the Congress further questioned as to why only the people in Calangute are issued 90 days bills while Mapusa, Porvorim and other areas the bills are issued with 30 days circle.
The Congress asked the AE to issue 30 days bill similar to Mapusa and Porvorim or face State level protest. Responding to the query, the AE assured to issue bills in 30-day cycle period.
The committee demanded to reintroduce the one-time payment scheme so that the consumers can pay their bills and avoid penalty. The party claimed that due to mistakes by the department, the consumers are suffering.
Congress also demanded with the State government to reduce all the taxes.
Youth Congress was also supported by the former MLA Agnelo Fernandes, former sarpanch Joseph Seqeuira, President of Calangute Constituency Forum Premanand Diukar, Benedict D’Souza and others.
