CALANGUTE: Calangute Panchayat in collaboration with the Traffic Cell is carrying out a comprehensive campaign to remove abandoned vehicles on the main road, lanes and parking areas in the village.
The panchayat in its survey has identified a total of 52 vehicles, including 14 cars lying by the road side in Calangute as abandoned vehicles and notices have been pasted on them.
The drive kicked-off on Thursday following complaints from the locals with regards to several abandoned vehicles lying around demanding a solution from the panchayat to clear them. The Motor Vehicle Act states that any vehicle left unattended to for more than 10 hours will be considered as an abandoned vehicle.
Sarpanch Shawn Martins said, “We are in the process of lifting the abandoned two-wheelers and four-wheelers lying by the road side in Calangute. A month-and-a-half ago we had pasted notices on the abandoned vehicles. Some took their vehicles while the others that have been left unclaimed are lifted.”
“These vehicles have been abandoned by the roadside for several years. With the influx of tourists in the coastal belt these vehicles have been occupying a lot of parking space. December is approaching and this move has been carried out to decongest Calangute. On the first day, 14 bikes have been lifted and we are in the process to lift the remaining abandoned bikes,” said Shawn.
“In another two days we will hire the services of a towing vehicle to lift 14 abandoned four-wheelers. If no one claims the vehicle within 15 days the same will be auctioned,” he added.
These vehicles are not only an eyesore but also cause inconvenience to the public.
