Calangute villagers object to destruction of the beach

MAPUSA: Villagers of Khobrawado, Calangute on Wednesday raised their objection for destruction of Beach Vegetation in survey number 208/1.

The villagers were headed by Members of Calangute Constituency Forum. President of the Forum Premanand Diukar said that in this connection, they have made letters to Chief Secretary, Member Secretary of NGPDA, Dy Collector Bardez and PI Calangute Police station.

The forum highlighted that the concerned owner has destroyed the beach vegetation and biodiversity and environment of the beach which is within 100 metres of HTL and is in violation of Environment Protection Act 1986 and Biological Diversity Act 2002 in jurisdiction of Village Panchayat Calangute.

Forum villagers demanded that concerned authority should restrain the Owner/Developer from carrying out further destruction of beach environment.

Locals blamed the present government and the local village for the illegalities. “Present government is completely responsible for this destruction and is not bothered about the environment. Panchayat appears to be blind as well as other authorities including Mamlatdar. I wonder who is in charge of Goa, the State government or these outsiders”, said Walter Lobo, an activist.

“There is order passed by NGT that government should initiate action on those who destroy the Sand dunes on beach. Instead of having the order, the destruction of Sand dunes continues. There are two sand dunes here and if this work is not stopped than tomorrow the sand dunes will be destroyed”, Diukar said.
