Candidates open election offices

Campaigning for the Margao Municipal polls picked up momentum on Sunday with candidates opening their election offices and distributing voters cards to the electorate.
If writer, singer and Konkani activist Purnanand Chari opened his election office in ward 8 of the Margao Municipal council this morning, Urban Development Minister hit the campaign for the trusted lieutenant of his close aide and GPCC general secretary Vijay Sardessai.
Alemao accompanied by Sardessai opened the election office of candidate and Fatorda Block Congress president Joseph Silva in ward 3 Silva is locked in a battle with sitting councillor and former MMC Chairperson Piedade Norohna, who is seeking re-election from the ward.
In ward 8, Purnanand Chari, who is backed by the Madgao Loksamiti, opened his election office by breaking the sacred coconut. Chari is locked in a straight fight against sitting councillor Gonzaco Rebello.
A cross section of his supporters from the ward were present during the office opening ceremony.
Some of the candidates have already opened their election offices and have kicked off their campaign in right earnest. Amongst those who were the first to open the election office was Pratima Coutinho, wife of Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho in ward 16 of the Margao Municipal council.
Many a candidates have already started their door-to-door campaigning, while many others are waiting for their voters cards for distribution to the electorate.
In Fatorda area of the Margao Municipal Council, corner meetings have already started by some of the candidates.
Incidentally, banners put by the candidates sans permission from the election and Municipal authorities were removed in a drive undertaken last week.
