CANACONA: The much awaited replacement of the entire Canacona KTC bus stand roof, which was partly open, has begun since Friday and will be completed before the onset of the monsoon.
While launching the refurbishment and replacement of the entire roofing of the Canacona KTC bus stand, Local MLA and Deputy Speaker, Isidore Fernandes, came down heavily on activists who had recently thatched some open portions of the roof with dry palm leaves.
Fernandes criticised the activists, some of whom were his own supporters when he was in Congress, by advising them not to seek cheap publicity.
Speaking to the media after launching the repairs which includes painting of the metal structure and replacement of all the roofing sheets, he informed the activists to bring any work that is to be taken up in the constituency to his notice and his office is open to all irrespective of party affiliation.
“The work got held up due to Zilla Panchayat elections Code of Conduct during the first quarter of the year while after that the COVID-19 pandemic induced lockdown didn’t allow the progress of the file, still knowing well the seriousness of the condition in which the bus stand was, we with the support of the Chief Minister got the work sanctioned. Don’t criticise for the sake of it, bring to my attention… any work and if I don’t do it than you can post on social media,” asserted Fernandes.
The shopkeepers and bus stand users heaved a sigh of relief when they saw the workers removing old dilapidated PVC roofing sheets on Friday morning and replacing them with new ones.
The much awarded Canacona KTC bus stand built in 2004 was in news for the last few years as the roofing sheets had blown off due to strong winds and rusty studs.
The launching of the work was attended by Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson, Nitu Desai, Deputy Chairperson, Hemant Naik Gaonkar, Councillor, Chaya Komarpant, other councillors, PWD JE, Pradeep Desai and other prominent citizens from Canacona.
The repair work costing about 29 lakh once completed will have new coated galvaluminium sheets on the roof and the fresh coat of paint to the rusted metal framework of the bus stand spread over two acres of land.
