CANACONA: Although Canacona taluka witnessed a dry day on Sunday many trees got uprooted due to high velocity winds in the taluka.
Sources at the fire and emergencies services at Mastimoll, Canacona said that they received as many as five distress calls of trees either falling on residential houses or on roads causing damage as well as blocking roads in the taluka on Sunday evening.
The first call was received by the fire and emergencies office in the afternoon when a coconut tree fell on the road at Khot Wada in Sadolxem. In another incident, a huge jackfruit tree fell on a residential house at Kazalke in Loliem causing a loss of over Rs 50,000 to the owner of the house.
In the third incident of trees uprooting, a coconut tree fell on the road and damaged an electrical alignment in Loliem; the residents on either side of the alignment had a power cut till it was restored later.
The NH66 was blocked for a while as a cashew tree came crashing down on the road at Bhatpal. Later in the evening, the fire fighting crew had to clear another cashew tree which had fallen on the internal road at Mastimoll.
All the trees which fell due to high velocity winds sweeping through the taluka where cleared by the fire fighting team lead by fire fighters Tulshidas Desai and Ulhas Gaonkar with the help of driver operator Lekhak Daikar, fire fighters Ratnakar Velip, Paresh Bhagat, Omresh Mokhardakar, Anil Talponkar and Ganesh Naik.
