CANACONA: The Canacona Police conducted a major crackdown in the early hours of Thursday morning, resulting in seizure of liquor valued at Rs 10 lakh that was sought to be clandestinely taken into Karnataka. The raid was conducted in Marle village, situated in the Cotigao wildlife sanctuary near the Goa-Karnataka border.
Acting on a tip off, Canacona police in civilian clothes conducted routine checks within the Cotigao Wildlife sanctuary and apprehended three smugglers transporting the illicit liquor.
The operation was spearheaded by DySP Tikam Singh Varma (IPS). His team raided three illicit dens operating near the Goa-Karnataka border.
Tikam Singh Varma, speaking to Herald, confirmed the seizure of liquor and two vehicles involved in the smuggling operation, all of which are handed over to Canacona Excise team following proper procedural protocols.
Altogether eight individuals, including operators of the illicit dens, were detained for further interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.
Despite logistical challenges, including the absence of mobile and wireless communication within the sanctuary, the seven-member team executed the operation seamlessly.
The operation, which commenced at approximately 5:30 am, concluded at around 12:00 noon. Two containers of illicit liquor were seized and transported from the sanctuary to the Canacona police station.
Tikam Singh Varma emphasized the importance of official communication with Forest and Wildlife officials regarding smuggling of inflammable products, such as liquor, through their territory.
Canacona Police Inspector Chandrakant Gawas confirmed to O Heraldo that the raid was conducted at around 5.30 am. After detaining and interrogating the accused, they were handed over to the Excise Department along with the liquor for further investigation.
