CANACONA: While most residential localities are facing scarcity of potable water, Canacona PWD (Water Supply) is unable to manage the water treatment plants to their available capacity of 15 MLD daily at Shristhal.
“Only 8-9 MLD of water is being treated daily at Shristhal water treatment plant, which is equipped with two plants of 5 MLD (old) and 10 MLD (commissioned a year ago) despite ample water is available,” informed a source at PWD.
“Water is regularly pumped from Chapoli Dam and through pump set installed at Ordhofond in Talpona River,” added the source.
While the Chapoli Dam is brimming with 31.5 RL of water storage, it is learnt that pumps have to be stopped after certain hours of running natural water pit in River Talpona at Ordhofond goes dry.
Despite the availability of ample water at Chapoli Dam, no arrangements are made to pump additional water from Chapoli sump to make up for the shortage of water from Ordhofond, added sources.
The underutilization of treatment plant implies acute shortage of water supply to many needy areas serviced by Shristhal plant either through pipelines or tankers.
According to PWD sources, the treated water at Shristhal plant is supplied through pipelines at parts of Agonda, entire Canacona civic areas, entire Shristhal, western parts of Poinguinim and Loliem-Polem border areas.
The PWD-owned two water tankers and at least six private tankers are used to supply water to some parts of Cotigao, Gaondongrim, Agonda, Poinguinim and Loliem-Polem.
Some residential areas at Khola, Gaondongrim and Cotigao are covered under rural water supply scheme, where ground water is tapped.
Canacona PWD AE Velingkar did not answer phone calls, while the cell phone of concerned JE in-charge of Shristhal plant was not reachable.
